Downtown Liverpool
This is the view from the top of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, looking down the hill towards the downtown area. I'll take you on a quick tour of the sights...
Starting from the far left riverside, the red scaffolding is the new Liverpool Museum, under construction when the photo was taken. Further along to the right, the domed building is the Port of Liverpool Building and with the two tall clock towers is the Royal Liver Building, these two along with the Cunard Building between them are the three graces of the pierhead.
Further to the right, the tall modern buildings in the centre of the view are the buildings of the central business area, though the tallest tower is the residential Beetham West (which has a restaurant for discerning yuppies at the top). The dome of the town hall is visible beneath it.
At the far right is the Radio City Tower (or St John's Beacon) which houses a local commercial radio station, and sits at the heart of the shopping area. Just beneath and to the left of it's 'head' is the Stanley Tobacco warehouse in the distance; the world's largest brick building. Slightly below and to the left of that is the tall pointy clock tower of the Municipal Buildings... the 'de facto' town hall.
The area of large blocky buildings running down the hill towards the bottom of the photo is the Ropewalks area. Formely an area of warehouses, it is now a regenerated area of offices, flats, and nightlife. Approximately dead centre of the photo you can see a load of coloured balls on sticks, this sculpture is in Wolstenholme Square, surrounded by nightclubs.
On the far side of the River Mersey is the Wirral peninsula... not part of the City of Liverpool, but part of the metro area. At the very right-most tip of the Wirral, you can see Fort Perch Rock, a Napoleonic era fort built to protect Liverpool from attack.
