Lonely Stones
Castlerigg Stone Circle, near Keswick, Cumbria is one of Britain's most impressive stone circles. The stones are smaller and less worked than those at Stonehenge, but then it is quite possible a lot older. Also the location, on top of a small hill in a lonely valley surrounded by much higher mountains is more visually striking.
The December of 2009 was one of the coldest on record in the UK and the snow fell thickly during what is normally a mild month. I tried to drive my car to the stones but had to abandon it half way, leaving me and my girlfriend to walk the rest of the way in the bitter cold. It was worth it though as there are few more awe inspiring sights in the country.
